What is the MEXT Research Scholarship?
The MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Research Scholarship is a prestigious scholarship by the Japanese Government, offering international students the chance to undertake postgraduate studies (Master’s/PhD) in Japan.
Selected scholars receive full tuition, monthly allowance, return airfare, and support in conducting research in Japan’s top universities across fields like science, engineering, technology, humanities, social sciences, and more.
What is a “Research Student”?
MEXT Research Students are those who:
- Are enrolled in graduate-level programs (Master’s or Doctoral courses) OR
- Are conducting research without a formal degree, with the aim to progress to a regular course
- May also undergo 6-month Japanese language training, if necessary
Fields of Study
Applicants must apply for the same or a related field they studied at the undergraduate/graduate level.

Japanese Government Scholarship Benefits
- Full Tuition Fees at Japanese universities
- Monthly Allowance:
- Non-Regular Students: ¥143,000
- Master’s Students: ¥144,000
- PhD Students: ¥145,000
- Additional regional allowance of ¥2,000–¥3,000 for designated areas
- Round-Trip Airfare (Economy class)
- University Admission Support & Japanese Language Training (if required)
- Access to University Dormitories or Private Housing Support
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a Pakistani national
- Born on or after April 2, 1991 (age under 34 as of April 1, 2026)
- Minimum 16 years of education for Master’s / 18 years for Doctorate
- Willing to learn Japanese, understand Japanese culture, and study in Japan
- Good academic records and health condition
- Cannot be a previous MEXT recipient unless criteria for reapplication are met
- Must not be receiving another government scholarship concurrently
- Must apply through the Embassy of Japan in Pakistan
How to Apply MEXT Scholarship in Japan

Step 2: Prepare the application in the following order as listed here.
The following documents (in given order) should be submitted before the deadline:
- Mark Sheet Form
- Application Form (1 original)
- Research Plan
- Attested copy of degree (hope certificate) and transcripts from the last universities attended.
- Attested copy of certification of graduation or degree certificate of university attended. (1 copy with original attestation)
- Recommendation Letter from the president/dean or the academic advisor at the current or last university attended. (1 original)
- Abstract of theses (if applicable) (1 original)
- Recommendation letter from the present employer (if applicable) (1 original)
NOTE:

- Submitted documents will not be returned.
- Application should be unstapled (assemble only with paper clip) and printed on A4 size paper.
- Certificates & documents, other than those mentioned above, will not be considered.
