What is the IDEAS MSCA Doctoral Network?

IDEAS stands for Improving Drug Efficacy with next-generation Amorphous materials and trained expertS. It is a European research and doctoral training initiative funded through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions.

The network addresses a major challenge in pharmaceutical development: many promising drug molecules dissolve poorly in water, limiting their effective delivery.

Researchers will investigate amorphous pharmaceutical systems, drug–polymer interactions, advanced formulations and manufacturing technologies that could improve drug solubility, stability and release.

The programme combines university research with industrial experience. Doctoral candidates will participate in specialised training, workshops, international research visits and secondments with academic and pharmaceutical industry partners.

Available PhD research positions and host institutions

The 15 doctoral projects cover experimental research, computational modelling, pharmaceutical formulation, nanotechnology and industrial process development.

Applicants should distinguish between the research host and the PhD-enrolling university. For example, DC10 is hosted by Zentiva in the Czech Republic, but doctoral enrolment is through Trinity College Dublin in Ireland.

Exploring other funded PhD positions in Europe? Applicants with backgrounds in materials science, chemistry or chemical engineering may also be interested in the ZEST MSCA PhD Positions 2027, which cover zinc-based energy storage, advanced battery materials and recycling. The two doctoral networks focus on different research problems, so compare the project requirements before applying.

Funding and salary: How much will doctoral candidates receive?

The IDEAS positions are funded through the MSCA Doctoral Networks programme. The EURAXESS announcement specifies the following monthly EU contributions.

Funding componentMonthly amount
Living allowance€4,010
Mobility allowance€710
Family allowance, if eligible€660

The living allowance is adjusted using a country correction coefficient. National employment regulations, taxes and social contributions also affect the amount ultimately received.

For this reason, applicants should not interpret €4,720 per month, or €5,380 with the family allowance, as a guaranteed net salary.

Selected researchers also benefit from doctoral training, international workshops, research visits and academic–industry collaboration.

Does MSCA funding cover the entire PhD duration?

IDEAS advertises a three-year MSCA fellowship, and most individual projects list 36-month doctoral appointments. However, DC3 and DC7 at the University of Silesia in Katowice specify a 48-month doctoral duration.

The published information does not clearly establish whether the additional 12 months receive the same funding or are supported through a separate arrangement.

Applicants considering these projects should ask the recruiting institution to confirm the full employment period, funding arrangements and expected completion timeline before accepting an offer.

Who is eligible to apply?

The IDEAS Doctoral Network accepts international applicants, including candidates from outside the European Union.

Applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Hold a relevant Master’s degree or equivalent, except where an individual position accepts Bachelor’s degree holders.
  • Not already hold a doctoral degree at recruitment, including candidates who have successfully defended their thesis but are awaiting formal award.
  • Meet the MSCA mobility rule for the recruiting country.
  • Qualify for admission to the relevant university’s doctoral programme.
  • Demonstrate appropriate research skills and academic preparation.
  • Have at least B2-level English proficiency, subject to additional institutional requirements.
  • Be willing to participate in international secondments.

Relevant academic backgrounds include physics, chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical engineering and biotechnology.

Applicants exploring funded doctoral opportunities beyond Europe can also review the Nanyang President’s Graduate Scholarship 2027–2028 in Singapore. It supports eligible PhD candidates at Nanyang Technological University, with different admission requirements, funding arrangements and application procedures from the MSCA IDEAS network.

Can applicants with only a Bachelor’s degree apply?

Yes, but only for certain projects.

The EURAXESS announcement specifically identifies DC9 and DC10 as positions that may accept applicants holding a Bachelor’s degree.

For DC9 at Trinity College Dublin, the published requirements specify a Bachelor’s degree at a minimum 2.1 honours level or equivalent in a relevant subject. A Master’s degree is desirable but not mandatory.

Applicants should check the individual project requirements rather than assume that Bachelor’s degree eligibility applies across all 15 positions.

Understanding the MSCA mobility rule

The mobility rule is one of the most important eligibility conditions.

Applicants must not have lived or carried out their main activity, such as employment or studies, in the recruiting country’s territory for more than 12 months during the 36 months immediately preceding recruitment.

For example, a researcher who has spent two years studying in Germany may still qualify for a position hosted in France, provided they satisfy the French mobility requirement.

The restriction concerns the country of recruitment, not Europe as a whole. Short holidays are generally excluded from the calculation.

Required application documents

Applicants must prepare the documents specified by the IDEAS recruitment team:

  1. Completed official application form.
  2. Research exposé explaining the proposed research interests and suitability.
  3. Academic curriculum vitae.
  4. Academic transcripts, translated into English if necessary.
  5. Final degree certificate, with English translation where required.
  6. Valid identification and evidence supporting mobility eligibility.
  7. Proof of English proficiency, if available.
  8. Up to three reference letters using the programme’s mandatory template.

Important reference-letter requirement: The central IDEAS instructions allow up to three reference letters using the mandatory template. However, the dedicated DC9 recruitment notice requests two letters with completed referee forms. Because the instructions differ, applicants should check the requirements for their selected projects and confirm the correct number with the IDEAS coordinator if necessary. Referees must submit their documents within the applicable application deadline.

The IDEAS website states that applicants are responsible for ensuring their referees submit their letters on time.

All required application attachments must be prepared in PDF format and follow the specified file-naming convention.

What should you include in the research exposé?

The dedicated DC9 recruitment notice specifies a maximum two-page research exposé describing previous research, such as a Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis. Its purpose is to assess scientific writing and the ability to explain research clearly and concisely.

This is different from preparing a complete proposal for an entirely new PhD project. Applicants should focus on the research questions they investigated, methods they used, their own contributions and the findings or skills gained.

The DC9 notice also specifies a maximum four-page academic CV and two reference letters accompanied by the required referee form.

These document limits and reference requirements are stated in the dedicated DC9 vacancy. The central IDEAS website gives broader instructions, including up to three reference letters. Applicants applying to other positions should verify which instructions apply and use the official IDEAS templates.

Applicants who need help explaining their research background can also read our guide to writing a PhD research proposal. It explains how to present research questions, methods and findings. For IDEAS, however, follow the research exposé instructions rather than submitting a full proposal for a new project.

How to apply for the MSCA IDEAS PhD positions

Applications are submitted centrally by email rather than through a single university admission portal.

Step 1: Visit the official IDEAS Open Positions page and review the detailed descriptions.

MSCA IDEAS Fully Funded PhD Positions in Europe 2027

Step 2: Select up to three doctoral projects matching your qualifications and research experience.

Step 3: Download the official application form and required templates. ( Application Form)

Step 4: Prepare your research exposé, CV, academic documents and mobility evidence.

Step 5: Submit your completed application to coordinator-ideas@univ-lille.fr.

Use the subject format specified in the EURAXESS announcement: IDEAS application [YOUR LAST NAME, YOUR FIRST NAME].

Ensure reference letters are submitted according to the programme’s instructions.

Only one central application is required, even when selecting three projects. Applicants may also select projects scheduled to open later, with consideration taking place once those positions become available.

Shortlisted applicants at certain institutions may subsequently need to complete additional recruitment procedures through the relevant host institution.

How are candidates selected?

The IDEAS recruitment process follows an open, transparent and merit-based selection procedure.

The dedicated EURAXESS recruitment notice for DC9 provides more detailed information about how eligible applications are assessed. The published criteria include:

  • Quality of the applicant’s academic CV and academic record.
  • Quality of the written research exposé.
  • Motivation to join the IDEAS network and the selected doctoral project.
  • Fulfilment of the required and preferred project qualifications.
  • Technical expertise relevant to the proposed research.
  • Reference forms and recommendation letters.

Shortlisted applicants are invited to interviews, preferably online, although in-person interviews may also be arranged. Interviewed candidates are ranked, and successful applicants receive offers according to the selection procedure.

These criteria are published in the DC9 recruitment notice and provide useful preparation guidance. Applicants should also check whether their preferred host institution has additional assessment requirements.

For help explaining your academic background and research interests, see our Statement of Purpose guide for Master’s and PhD applications. Although IDEAS does not request a separate conventional SOP, the guide can help you organise your reasons for choosing particular doctoral projects.

What does this mean for applicants?

Your application should provide clear evidence of relevant research experience rather than simply listing academic qualifications. For example, applicants interested in computational modelling should describe the simulation methods, programming tools or modelling projects they have completed. Those applying for experimental pharmaceutical research should explain their laboratory methods, analytical techniques and relevant research outcomes.

The programme does not publish a universal GPA threshold or a numerical weighting system for these criteria.

Careers Help Desk Counter Angle: Choose your research projects before writing the application

One of the most useful features of IDEAS is the ability to select up to three doctoral projects through a single application. However, applicants should avoid treating all 15 positions as interchangeable.

A chemical engineering graduate with experience in process optimisation, extrusion or manufacturing scale-up may have a stronger technical match with DC10 than with a project focused primarily on molecular spectroscopy.

Similarly, someone experienced in molecular dynamics, computational chemistry or machine learning should examine DC6 and DC11, where modelling is central to the proposed research.

Before preparing your research exposé, compare the published methodologies of your preferred projects against your own academic work. Identify relevant laboratory techniques, software, research projects or publications that demonstrate your preparation.

This is particularly important for applicants changing disciplines. A general interest in pharmaceutical research may establish motivation, but the application should also explain how your existing technical skills can contribute to the proposed work.

Finally, check the host institution’s PhD admission requirements and the funding duration. A strong research match does not override local admission rules or the MSCA mobility restriction.

If you find it difficult to explain why a particular research project suits your background, our scholarship motivation letter guide includes examples of connecting academic experience to programme requirements. Use these principles to strengthen the relevant parts of your IDEAS application, rather than preparing an additional letter unless requested.
