What does the IMSOGLO Erasmus Mundus Scholarship cover?
The IMSOGLO Erasmus Mundus Scholarship provides financial support for students completing the full two-year master’s programme.
Scholarship recipients receive:
- €1,400 per month for a maximum of 24 months.
- Exemption from programme participation fees.
- Coverage of mandatory medical, assistance, accident, baggage and personal liability insurance through the programme participation arrangements.
- Access to the programme’s teaching activities, laboratory courses, excursions and master’s thesis research without paying the participation fee.
The monthly allowance is intended to cover accommodation, travel and other living expenses. It is not an additional payment on top of separately guaranteed travel or housing allowances.
The total stipend can reach €33,600 if paid for the full 24 months. Actual personal expenses will depend on the study location and individual circumstances.
What if you do not receive the scholarship?
IMSOGLO also accepts self-funded students. Its published annual programme participation fees are:
| Student category | Annual fee | Two-year fee |
|---|---|---|
| EEA nationals | €1,700 | €3,400 |
| Non-EEA nationals | €9,000 | €18,000 |
| Erasmus Mundus scholarship holders | €0 | €0 |
These fees do not represent the full cost of self-funded study. The programme separately estimates living expenses at €1,000 per month, alongside travel costs.
Students with disabilities may also be eligible for additional financial contributions for specific needs, whether or not they hold an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.
Note: Applicants can indicate in the application portal whether they would be willing to enrol as self-funded students if they do not receive an Erasmus Mundus scholarship. IMSOGLO explicitly states that selecting this option does not reduce the applicant’s chances of receiving scholarship funding. For the September 2027 intake, the application deadlines are 28 February 2027 for non-EEA self-funded applicants and 31 May 2027 for EEA self-funded applicants. The scholarship deadline for all nationalities remains 28 February 2027.
If you are looking for a broader environmental science master’s that combines scientific study with policy and management, the MESPOM Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2027–2029 is another programme worth comparing. Its published financial-aid application deadline is 7 January 2027.
What will you study in the IMSOGLO master’s programme?
IMSOGLO is a 120-ECTS joint master’s programme focused on soil science, climate change, sustainable land management and environmental processes.
All students begin at Ghent University in Belgium, where the first semester establishes a foundation in soil biology, soil chemistry, soil physics, land information systems and applied statistics.
From the second semester, students follow one of two specializations.
1. Soil-Plant System Processes and Global Change
This specialization involves Ghent University, BOKU University and the University of Göttingen.
It focuses on soil-plant interactions, biogeochemistry, microbiology, agroforestry and agroecology. Students investigate how soil organisms, plants and management practices influence ecosystem processes under changing environmental conditions.
2. Soil Ecosystem Services and Global Change
This specialization involves Ghent University and Aarhus University.
It addresses the functions soils provide within ecosystems and how those functions respond to environmental and global change.
Both pathways include advanced coursework and a master’s thesis supervised by academics from at least two partner universities.
The programme is particularly relevant to students interested in soil science, environmental research, sustainable agriculture, ecosystem management and climate-related research careers.
Students whose interests focus more on crop protection, plant diseases and sustainable agricultural production may also explore the PlantHealth Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2027. It offers a different agricultural science pathway, with a scholarship application deadline of 31 December 2026.
Who is eligible for the IMSOGLO Scholarship 2027?
Academic qualifications
Applicants must hold an academic bachelor’s degree equivalent to at least 180 ECTS from a recognized university or engineering college.
Accepted backgrounds include pure and applied sciences, such as biology, chemistry, geology, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, civil engineering and agricultural engineering.
However, holding a degree in one of these fields does not automatically establish eligibility.
Your bachelor’s degree must include at least 40 ECTS or an equivalent amount of natural science coursework covering at least four of the following disciplines:
Physics, chemistry, mathematics, ecology, biology, geology, physical geography, environmental sciences and agricultural sciences.
This requirement is important for applicants whose degrees combine engineering, technology and other subjects.
Can final-year bachelor’s students apply?
The rules differ depending on your nationality and whether you have already graduated.
Non-EEA applicants must have completed their bachelor’s degree by 28 February 2027 to be considered for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship. If they have graduated but their final diploma has not yet been issued, they may submit an official Certificate of Graduation signed and stamped by their university.
Non-EEA students who will graduate after the scholarship deadline may apply for academic admission using an official statement of expected graduation, but they will not be considered for Erasmus Mundus funding.
EEA nationals have a specific exception. Those in their final bachelor’s year may apply for the scholarship using proof of enrolment and earlier academic transcripts. Their motivation letter must state when they expect to graduate.
If IMSOGLO does not match your academic background, you can compare the ILSPSD Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2027, which also offers €1,400 per month but focuses on international law, security, peace and sustainable development. Its scholarship deadline is 4 January 2027.
English language requirements
IMSOGLO accepts the following English language qualifications:
| Test | Minimum requirement |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | Overall 6.5, with at least 6.0 in every component |
| TOEFL iBT | 90/120 or equivalent 4.5/6 |
| Cambridge | C1 Advanced certificate |
TOEFL iBT Home Edition is accepted, but IELTS Online is not. Duolingo, TOEIC and TOEFL ITP are also not accepted.
Can you apply without IELTS or TOEFL?
Yes, but only under a specific exemption.
Applicants who completed their previous higher education degree in one of the countries explicitly listed by IMSOGLO may submit an official English Language of Instruction Certificate from their university instead of a test result.
The official exemption list includes India, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States and several other specified countries.
Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal are not on the published exemption list. Applicants whose previous higher education degrees were obtained in these countries must provide an accepted English language test, even if their degree was taught in English.
A degree taught in English does not automatically qualify you for an exemption. The country where you obtained the degree must appear on the official exemption list.
For example, a degree obtained in Pakistan is not covered by the published country-based exemption, even if the university taught the entire programme in English.
Accepted language evidence must remain valid at enrolment. Where a certificate has no stated expiry date, IMSOGLO applies its four-academic-year rule.
The programme states that these English language requirements are agreed among the partner universities and that no additional exemptions are granted.
How are Erasmus Mundus scholarship recipients selected?
IMSOGLO distinguishes between academic admission and scholarship selection.
The Student Selection Group, representing the partner universities, evaluates scholarship applications using:
- Previous academic achievements.
- Relevance of the bachelor’s degree and academic background.
- Curriculum vitae.
- Motivation.
The official 2027 Application Manual also states that applicants with a bachelor’s or master’s thesis, internship report or project report relevant to IMSOGLO can receive a higher scholarship ranking. These summaries are optional, with a maximum length of one A4 page for each applicable field. If your previous work relates to soil processes, environmental science, agricultural systems or another relevant topic, use the summary to explain the research question, methods and your contribution. The programme does not publish a numerical weighting for this additional evidence.
The programme indicates that successful scholarship candidates typically have very good or excellent bachelor’s grades, usually first-class results or a position within the top 30% of their cohort.
Meeting the minimum admission requirements therefore does not guarantee scholarship funding.
A strong application should explain how your previous coursework and academic experience connect to soil science and the specialization you want to pursue. Applicants with relevant research, laboratory, fieldwork or environmental project experience should describe that experience accurately in their CV and motivation letter.
Your motivation letter should explain why your academic background suits IMSOGLO and how the chosen specialization connects to your future plans. If you need help organizing these arguments, our guide on how to write a scholarship motivation letter includes examples for master’s applicants, including an Erasmus Mundus-style application.
Careers Help Desk Counter Angle: Check your coursework before preparing your motivation letter
One of the most easily overlooked IMSOGLO requirements is the combination of 40 ECTS in natural sciences and coverage of at least four specified disciplines.
An applicant with an engineering degree may have strong grades, research experience and an interest in climate change but still need to demonstrate sufficient academic preparation across the required subjects.
Before spending time refining your scholarship essay, examine your bachelor’s transcript and identify the courses that correspond to the programme’s nine recognized disciplines.
Prepare a simple private checklist showing each relevant course, its credit value and the discipline it covers. Where your university uses a different credit system, consult the official application instructions for the appropriate documentation.
This exercise can help you identify a possible eligibility problem early and describe your academic preparation more precisely in your motivation letter.
IMSOGLO does not review transcripts or credentials by email before application. The formal assessment takes place through documents submitted to the online portal.
Once you have identified your relevant coursework, consider how it connects to your intended specialization. Our guide to writing a statement of purpose for master’s applications explains how to connect academic preparation, research interests and programme fit. IMSOGLO requires a motivation letter rather than a separate SOP, so follow its one-page letter instructions.
