Eligibility Criteria

Interested applicants to study in Japan with a Fully Funded Japanese Government Scholarship at Ritsumeikan University, must fulfill the following eligibility criteria;

  • Have the nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with the Japanese government. Applicants who have Japanese nationality are not eligible (Japanese dual-nationality citizens who plan on renouncing their Japanese citizenship, however, may apply).
  • Have been born on or after April 2, 1987.
  • Be in both good physical and mental health.
  • Be willing to newly acquire a student visa and newly enter Japan for the purpose of study upon receipt of the scholarship.
  • Be able to arrive in Japan on a date designated by Ritsumeikan University in the middle of September 2022.
  • Have a CGPA equal to or higher than 2.30 out of 3.00 for current degree program as calculated by MEXT’s formula (or most recently attended degree program for persons not currently enrolled).
  • For applicants to English language medium degree programs: Have English language ability equal to or greater than Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) B2 level. See CEFR Conversion Chart and MEXT Language Requirements for details.

How to Apply

Eligible and interested candidates are encouraged to apply for the Ritsumeikan University MEXT Scholarship 2022 by following the given procedure;

Step 1;

First, download the application guidelines and application forms along with the field of study and reference formate and fill them accordingly;

Notes to Keep in Mind before Posting your Application

1) Make sure that ALL of your application documents meet ALL requirements described in the guidelines checklist.
2) In particular, your Letter of Recommendation, and in turn, your application, will not be accepted if it does not meet all requirements mentioned in the guidelines.
3) Additionally, your transcripts, and in turn, your application, will not be accepted if they do not meet all requirements mentioned in the guidelines. If your transcripts do not meet the criteria in the guidelines, please obtain additional supplemental documentation, such as a detailed explanation of the grade scale, as necessary from your university before submitting your application.
4) If the rest of your documents are ready but you are waiting for the arrival or announcement of an English language test score, please send the rest of your application in advance before the deadline. Follow up by delivering a scan of your language test score certificate via email as soon as it is ready.

  • Field of Study and Study Program (Monbukagakusho designated form)
  • Letter of Recommendation by the dean, or a person of equivalent or higher position, at the applicant’s school or institution (Must be addressed to the “President of Ritsumeikan University, Japan”)
  • Official certificate of grades from most recent academic institution attended (Undergraduate or Graduate degree program)
  • Official certificate of graduation or expected graduation or of program completion or expected program
    completion from most recent academic institution attended (Undergraduate or Graduate degree program)
  •  (Optional) Records from most recent university indicating superior academic achievement with clear
    indicator of outstanding performance (e.g. GPA, grades and criteria, or individual rank order)
  •  Abstract of thesis written for most recent academic degree awarded, etc…
    *The abstract MUST be a concise summary (i.e. 1 page maximum) of your most recently written thesis, or of your graduation project or a term paper, etc… if you did not write a thesis.
  •  Copy of passport page containing the applicant’s name and date of birth or a copy of your family register or residence certificate, etc. (applicants in possession of a passport must submit the passport page copy)
  • Copy of documentation showing objective proof of level of English language ability
  • Certificate of health (University designated form, or form with identical contents)
  • Three (3) passport-quality photographs, (4.5 cm tall x 3.5 cm wide, front-facing, photos taken within 6
    months of application showing applicant from chest up, with name and nationality written on the reverse)
