What is a “MEXT Research Student”?

A Research Student under MEXT is:

A Master’s or Doctoral-level applicant, OR
A non-degree research student, aiming to transition into a graduate program
May undergo 6-month Japanese language training if needed

Note: Fields like clinical medical practice and arts involving practical training are generally excluded.

Who Can Apply for Scholarship in Japan?

Nationality: Must be a citizen of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan
Age: Must be born on or after April 2, 1991
Education:
- Master’s: Must have completed a Bachelor’s degree (16 years)
- PhD: Must hold a Master’s degree (18 years of education) or equivalent
Health: Must be physically and mentally fit
Language: Must be willing to learn Japanese and adapt to life in Japan
Visa: Must obtain a “Student” visa for entry
