Eligibility Criteria

Interested applicants to study abroad or their own countries through Wellcome UK Scholarship 2021, must fulfill the following eligibility criteria;

• Applicant must be a national of a low- or middle-income country
• Students proposed research focuses on a health priority in a low- or middle-income country 
• Applicants must have sponsorship from an eligible host organisation in a low- or middle-income country apart from mainland China.
• Students must hold a clinical or non-clinical undergraduate degree in a relevant subject 
• be at an early stage in a career with limited research experience (but the applicant must have demonstrated interest in, or aptitude for, research).

Important Requirements

Applicants must be based at an eligible host organisation in a low- or middle-income country for the research project. When Applicants host organization submits Applicants application, they must agree to provide the space and resources Applicants will need from the start date through to the end date of the Applicants award.

Sponsor

Applicants must have a sponsor who is a head of the department or equivalent (for example center director or head of school) in the Applicants host organization.

The sponsor must be able to guarantee that Applicants will have a post for the duration of the fellowship. The sponsor should not expect Applicants to spend more than eight hours a week on non-research activities (for example clinical duties, teaching or administration).

Applicants’ sponsor’s support and mentorship should be part of a longer-term commitment to help Applicants achieve applicant`s career aspirations.

Supervisor

Applicants must have a supervisor who will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of applicant`s research project. Applicants should also have additional supervisors for each period that Applicants spend outside Applicants host organisation, including applicants taught course. They must agree to provide the space and resources applicants will need.

Applicants should give careful thought to applicant’s choice of supervisor(s). 

A supervisor should:

• have an ongoing research programme
• have a strong track record in research, training and mentorship
• provide Applicants with guidance during the application process and fellowship.

Applicants can nominate applicant`s sponsor as a supervisor, if appropriate.

How to Apply

Eligible and interested applicants are encouraged to apply for the fully funded scholarships to study abroad through International Master`s Fellowships by following the given procedure;

Step 1;

Please read the “Eligibility Criteria” section above before application to prepare and submit the competitive applications.

Step 2;

Applicants are also encouraged to contact their research office at their host organization as early as possible in the application process. They should be able to advise applicants on:

• how to structure application, including the budget 
• what information is needed to support applicants` proposal 
• how much time applicant`s host organization will need to approve applicant application after applicant submit it.

Step 3;

Log in to our online application system Grant Tracker. Do this at an early stage so that you can familiarize yourself with the system.

Applicant must complete every section of the form. Applicant`s sponsor and supervisor will need to complete some of the sections. 

Step 4;

When applicants have completed the form, submit it to host organization. A person at host organization with the role of ‘authorised organizational approver’ will get an automated email from Wellcome asking them to review and submit the application.
