The University of Tokyo is recommending the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship for new international students to get higher education at the Graduate Schools of UTokyo. The educational bursary aims to attract outstanding international participants and support their masters or doctoral degree study in Japan. Eligibility Criteria

Interested applicants for the Japanese Government MEXT Scholarships 2023 University Recommended for International Students to pursue their higher studies, must fulfill the following eligibility criteria before application;

  • Eligible Countries: International applicants are eligible.
  • Students must have at least an undergraduate or bachelor’s degree (16-year education) or equivalent in the relevant field at the time of Master’s Degree applications.
  • Applicants must have bachelor’s and Master’s degrees or transcripts (total 18 years of education) or equivalent in the relevant field at the time of Ph.D. applications.
  • Must have at least 2.3 grade out of 3.0 scale in highest or latest education
  • Age Limit: Must have been born on or after 2 April 1988 (in short under 35 years’ old)
  • Applicants must be in good physical and medical health
  • Language Requirement: Applicants are asked to fulfill the language requirement to get enrolled as given below, at the University of Tokyo with MEXT Scholarship.

Language Proficiency

Applicants must meet one of the language requirements in either English or in Japanese as described below:

  • English
    • Holds an English proficiency test score equivalent to B2 or above on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale (e.g. TOEFL iBT 72 or above, IELTS 5.5 or above).

  • Japanese
    • Has passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) with a score of N2 or higher.
    • Has completed an educational program whose primary language of instruction is Japanese that satisfies the entrance requirements for the Master’s Program or Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Science, the University of Tokyo.

Benefits

The award will provide a monthly stipend (144,000 yen/month (for a student of a Master’s Program), or 145,000 yen/month (for a student of a Doctoral Program) (an additional monthly stipend of 2,000 or 3,000 yen may be added to those students undertaking study or research in some designated regions of the country), and also travel to Japan cost from Japan.
